How to Cope With Serial Killing (2022)
directed by Giselle Turner
How to Cope With Serial Killing is a short film about a young woman trying to overcome the grief of losing her mother, but her ways of coping could be considered somewhat unorthodox. The film itself is very dark both thematically and visually, with gruesome make-up and mise-en-scene making it quite the watch.
The initial idea was to go down the route of reflecting grief in the score but after chatting to the director it was obvious that the music needed to be much stranger in order to match the film. This led to throwing pretty much any kind of musical theory out of the window.
The score quickly became more of a soundscape utilising various homemade samples and heavily processed sounds. Some of the samples included were:
- a gate
- a washing machine
- a surprisingly wide variety of bannisters
- the London Underground
- scaffolding
- a creaking door
